NEWPORTER ROSTER

(Notes
in italics were added in 2013 by Clyde A. Phillips)
NC NUMBER (Newporter Class
hull and sail number, found on bronze oval plate in deckhouse, on sail, or in
bow of dinghy). Cutter and sloop are used
interchangeably in the roster. Ackerman used"sloop" in his records,
but some owners use "cutter"—possibly there are Newporters of both types. There were three gaff-rigged ketches,
NC2, 3 and 5; and four sloop/cutter rigs, Ne21, 27, 53 and 66. Three Newporters
are known to be lost: NC 50, NC61 and NC123.

The discussion of Sloop and Cutter:
My
studies show that the placement of the mast is what makes a cutter. The cutter’s mast is at, or a little forward
of, the center of the length of the boat.
It has two sails (stays’l and jib) in the fore triangle with the stays’l
tacked to the foredeck and the jib to the stem head, with no bowsprit. Some had bowsprits with the stays’l at the
stem head and the jib at the end of the bowsprit. But Ack was right, they are all sloops. All cutters are sloops but all sloops are not
cutters. With so many differing
definitions of cutter it is best to follows Ack’s lead.
49. BLACK SWAN, I sailed this one from Dorchester to Oyster
Bay, L.I., NY. It was then owned by a,
or the, Vice President of ABC News at the time.
66A. WAYFARER, No number given but we'll assign this one. We think this
was one of two or three· boats sold unfinished at auction., completed by owner.
Planked?
66B. SUNDOWNER, Sold by Earl Gibson, 19226 Gunlock Av., Carson CA 90746,
(213) 774-2527 or 7772335. New owner info coming. Gibson says boat not
numbered. We assume this was one of the boats, (see 66A), that were sold
unfinished at auction when Ackerman ran into financial problems. A group
of local businessmen bought him out and gave him 25% of the company
which may have built 10 more boats at Costa Mesa. Production moved to Dorchester, N.J. with,
it has been reported, #67 the first off there. Sundowner is cutter
rig and planked.
67. MERDEKA, First Newporter built at Dorchester?
This box contains a copy out of Muf’s newest Roster;
my notes are below.
During Ack’s
last days in CA and Dorchester’s first days building Newporters the two yards
alternated numbers in order of the date of building start or as otherwise
decided between them. There is therefore
no specific two numbers between which production moved from one coast to the
other. I agree that the numberless boats
were most likely the auctioned off boats.
One primary
difference between the west and east coast boats is the draft. As designed, the west coast boats had a draft
of 5’11” while the east coast boats had 4’11” of draft. In the west the ballast was cast iron, in the
east it was lead.
83. WESTERN WAY II, John Barlow, jbarlow@bell.mma.edu. Former
owner Garry Moore. Ex – DARK STAR
One year at
the New York Boat Show I manned a Newporter at the 79th Street
Marina in conjunction with the show , on the Hudson River, NYC. Garry Moore came aboard and we talked NP’s,
sailing, Baltimore and the Eastern Shore in MD for about three hours (Gary was
from Baltimore and I’m the son of a Hooper’s Island ‘Shoreman’ and have been
accepted there as a ‘Shoreman’ myself).
It was during this time that he said “I’m going to have one of
these.” That made Dorchester happy. Garry found a previously owned NP and bought
her. Garry was, if memory serves me well, the host of the TV show “What’s My Line.”
Consequently Ack was invited to be a contestant on the show.
88. LITTLE
YANKEE - JANIE, Lt. Commander Reed
Whitney
From Muf’s 2008 edition of the roster
88 JANIE
? Edwin and Marie Starbuck.
From Muf’s 2013 edition of the roster
88. JANIE, Edwin and Marie Starbuck. Ex LITTLE YANKEE, Lt. Commander Reed Whitney
My supposition
for this edition of NP Roster Addenda I
First launched with the name “Little Yankee;” Origin of ”Janie” not known. She was named after Irving and Electra (Exy) Johnson’s famous brigantine “Yankee” which was the second “Yankee” the Johnsons owned. Janie could have been the name of the dinghy, or, as in the box just above, the name a later owner gave her. This boat was still at the dock but not delivered when I started at Dorchester.
The dinghy of either 88 or 89 was named “Littlest Yankee.” My recent memory says it was Reed Whitney's LITTLE YANKEE that carried the LITTLEST YANKEE.
89. YANKEE, First owner, Richard Whitney, no relation to Reed Whitney, also named
his boat after the Yankee not knowing of 88’s name. I worked on this boat a little, long enough
to say it is the first Newporter I worked on.
99. ENTERPRISE, My favorite Newporter when launched, still my
favorite. The first one for which I made
and whipped on a set of ratlines.
101. DREAM MARU, The owner told me Maru is Japanese for Boat.
102. DUDHEEN, First owner, Arnold M. Hess, named her after
the song which was entitled “Me Little Dudheen,” a favorite of his mother who
used to sing it, and had a framed copy of the poem hung on the forward bulkhead
in the main salon. Arnold pronounced the
name as “Duejean”
110. CARIBEE, Another favorite because of the original
paint scheme: white hull, red bulwarks, boot top and transom.
112. YELLOW CAT, First
owner was a high ranking officer in the CATERPILLAR company; the boat had a
Caterpillar engine and was first painted Caterpillar yellow.
113. WILSON, nee LOVELY LADY, My “Most Studied Newporter,” presently with a very capable owner (Bob Mitchell of Newporter 40 Together fame) who bought her with the name of WILSON.
124. MOONFLEET…. sold new to Lee Patterson. Galley modified from standard plan and was designed and mostly built by Lee Patterson. Natasha Yonker is the last owner succeeding Justine Crichton, as of late April, 2013.
1 Gerald (Muf) Muffley has
been updating Lee E. Owen’s Newporter Roster from before Newporter 40 Together
was designed and published by Bob Mitchell. Thank you, Muf!
2
Clyde was one of the New Jersey builders of Newporters in the late 1960’s.
